A Chinese woman, known as Duan, from Guangan City in Sichuan province, has filed a lawsuit against her daughter and son-in-law, seeking $26,000 in compensation for caring for her grandson for five years.
Duan provided care for her grandson from February 2018 to July 2023, citing her daughter and son-in-law’s lack of time to care for the child.
The couple, surnamed Hu and Zhu, sent Duan a monthly stipend of 1,000 yuan (US$135) and a childcare fee of 2,000 yuan during these five years.
Despite an initial agreement to pay Duan $6,800, Hu failed to complete the payment, leading Duan to file a lawsuit against them.
The court acknowledged Duan’s entitlement to a childcare fee but deemed her initial demand excessive. It revised the amount to 82,500 yuan.
Zhu suggested that the lawsuit stemmed from his ongoing divorce dispute.
The story garnered attention on Chinese social media, with many supporting Duan’s decision to seek proper childcare compensation.
Users praised her actions, with one stating, “The compensation she requests is right,” and another commenting that she was fighting for her daughter’s well-being.
This case highlights the complexities of family relationships and legal obligations regarding childcare.
