Mountain View – Google is rolling out ChromeOS 177 to eligible Chromebook devices, ushering in a host of exciting features and improvements. With this update, users can expect the Material You design, revamped Quick Settings, enhanced battery management, and various other enhancements to make their Chromebook experience more enjoyable and efficient.
One notable change in ChromeOS 177 is the adoption of Google’s Material You design philosophy. This design refresh brings a cohesive and visually pleasing interface to Chromebook users. It touches upon several elements, including Quick Settings, notifications, battery charging controls, color accessibility settings, and more. Users will notice new rectangular buttons for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other settings, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.
ChromeOS 177 also introduces a convenient feature that allows users to quickly find the specifications of their Chromebook through the Launcher. This addition simplifies the process of accessing essential information about your device.
One of the highlights of this update is the Adaptive Charging feature, designed to improve battery longevity. By enabling this feature in Settings > Device > Power, users can ensure that their battery charges more gradually after reaching 80 percent capacity. This approach prolongs battery health and longevity, promoting a better overall experience.
In response to the growing demand for expressive communication, ChromeOS 177 now enables users to search for GIFs directly in the emoji picker, enhancing messaging and social interactions.
The Quick Settings display has undergone a significant transformation in ChromeOS 177. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Nearby Share, Cast Screen, VPN, Screen Capture, and Do Not Disturb settings now appear in a user-friendly grid layout, replacing the previous small circles. This change streamlines the access to essential functions and settings.
Google has also addressed productivity and communication needs with this update. A new notification panel located at the bottom right of the screen provides easy access to messages, emails, and alerts from apps. Additionally, the Calendar app has been enhanced to display upcoming meetings and offer direct join buttons for added convenience.
Another exciting addition is the dynamic color theming feature. Chromebook devices will adapt accent colors based on the shades of the wallpaper, ensuring a harmonious visual experience. Users can access this feature via the Wallpaper and Style app by right-clicking on the desktop.
ChromeOS 177 also enhances user privacy with a microphone privacy indicator, which informs users when apps are actively using the microphone or camera.
In a move aimed at enhancing multitasking, users can now listen to audio from an Android app and the web simultaneously without interruptions, contributing to a more seamless experience.
Additional improvements in ChromeOS 177 include GIF support in the emoji picker, time-lapse video recording in the Camera app, and enhancements to Vietnamese Telex and VNI input methods.
The rollout of ChromeOS 177 will occur automatically for eligible devices via over-the-air (OTA) updates. However, users can manually check for the update by navigating to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates on their Chromebooks.
With ChromeOS 177, Google continues to refine the Chromebook experience, delivering a blend of style, functionality, and efficiency to users worldwide.
