In a heartbreaking incident, a 7-year-old girl from Tennessee lost her life after a tragic accident involving birthday balloons. Alexandra Kelly’s mother, Channa Kelly, is sharing her story to raise awareness about the hidden dangers associated with celebratory decorations.

On September 24, Channa Kelly lovingly prepared for her daughter’s birthday, purchasing a large rainbow number 7 balloon filled with helium, along with approximately 10 Roblox-themed latex balloons. Little did she know that these seemingly innocent balloons could turn into a nightmare.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mrs. Kelly expressed her deep sorrow and issued a warning to other parents. While she was always aware of the choking hazard posed by latex balloons, she never imagined the risk associated with large Mylar helium-filled balloons.

A week after her birthday celebration, Alexandra decided to pop all of her latex balloons. Unbeknownst to her mother, she played with the remaining non-latex Mylar balloon. Alexandra later went to lie down in her bedroom, while her mother, still unaware of any potential danger, briefly left the room.

Upon returning to the living room, Mrs. Kelly made a devastating discovery. She found Alexandra face down on the floor, unresponsive, with the Mylar balloon covering her head. In a state of panic, she swiftly removed the balloon, called 911, and began performing CPR.

Despite the rapid response from both the police and medics, Alexandra could not be revived.

The heart-wrenching incident occurred on October 1st, leaving Mrs. Kelly grappling with unimaginable grief. The exact cause of Alexandra’s death remains uncertain, as it is unclear whether she succumbed to helium poisoning or suffocation. The family is currently awaiting the preliminary results, which could take several months for a final determination.

The Clinton Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with balloons, particularly when young children are involved. According to data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, balloons are the leading cause of child suffocation deaths among all children’s products.

Parents and caregivers are urged to exercise caution when allowing children to play with balloons, ensuring they are under supervision, and promptly removing any deflated or popped balloons from their reach. It is essential to raise awareness about these hidden risks and take preventive measures to keep our children safe.
