Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, widely known as ‘TheLiverDoc,’ has recently had his social media account suspended on X, formerly known as Twitter, following a defamation dispute with Himalaya Wellness Company. Dr. Philips is a prominent Indian hepatologist and clinician-scientist recognized for his outspoken stance on alternative medicine and his active presence on various social media platforms.
Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips was born in Kottayam, Kerala, and is the third child among four siblings. He comes from a diverse and vibrant family background.
In his personal life, Dr. Philips is the son of Padma Shri recipient Philip Augustine and is a proud parent to two daughters and a son.
In 2019, Dr. Philips co-authored a paper that investigated the unfortunate case of a woman who passed away after consuming dietary supplements from Herbalife. Although the paper was initially retracted by the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, it was later reinstated thanks to the efforts of microbiologist Elisabeth Bik and the platform Retraction Watch.
Dr. Philips is known for his vocal criticism of alternative medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and Homeopathy. He asserts that these systems lack scientific rigor and are based on primitive and untested observations from ancient times. His critical views have led to legal challenges, including defamation lawsuits filed against him by various entities in the field of alternative medicine.
In a research publication in Hepatology Communications, Dr. Philips and his fellow researchers concluded that Homeopathic remedies could potentially cause severe liver injuries, further fueling his criticism of Homeopathy.
Account Suspension and Defamation Dispute
The recent suspension of Dr. Philips’s X account on September 28, 2023, came as a result of an interim injunction order issued by a Bengaluru court. This order was in response to a defamation claim filed by Himalaya Wellness Company against Dr. Philips.
Beyond his online presence, Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips serves as a senior consultant hepatologist and physician-scientist at Rajagiri Hospital in Kochi, Kerala. His practical experience adds a valuable dimension to his expertise.
