Riyadh witnessed a groundbreaking moment as Lucid Group, the US-based electric car manufacturer, officially inaugurated Saudi Arabia’s very first car manufacturing facility on September 27. Lucid’s Advanced Manufacturing Plant-2 (AMP-2) marks not only a significant milestone for the company but also a crucial step towards Saudi Arabia’s electric vehicle future.
Located near Jeddah, AMP-2 is set to produce cutting-edge electric vehicles not only for the Saudi market but for export to other regions as well. The facility has already commenced semi-knockdown (SKD) assembly, with an initial annual capacity of 5,000 cars. However, plans for the future are even more ambitious, as the facility is slated to scale up production to an impressive 155,000 units per year.
Lucid’s CEO, Peter Rawlinson, expressed his delight during the inauguration, emphasizing the historic nature of this milestone for Saudi Arabia. Beyond the obvious economic and industrial significance, AMP-2 is poised to be a hotbed of innovation, a generator of jobs, and a center for nurturing local Saudi talent while offering specialized skills training.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative, which aims to achieve 30 percent electric car sales by 2030, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. In May 2022, Lucid had already announced the commencement of its factory construction in the Kingdom, with an estimated investment of 12.3 billion riyals.
As the world embraces the electric vehicle revolution, Lucid Group’s AMP-2 not only marks a momentous occasion in Saudi Arabia’s automotive history but also underlines the growing importance of electric transportation on the global stage. The facility’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and local talent development positions it as a significant player in the industry’s future. With Lucid’s expertise and vision, Saudi Arabia is driving toward a greener and more sustainable automotive landscape.
